Unless you have a really deep pot, you're going to have to cut everything longer than 3" or so and repot it in a shallow pot - in a month or so it will be ready for a larger one. Or you could go to the larger one now, and water carefully for the next few months. You'll also want to fossick for the dead (non-yellow) roots nearer the root base.

Doneâ¦Thank you . It was a bit more than I normally chop off but I thought I would see what others do and do what is suggested. So if this plant croaks, I will put it on you (that's a joke son). I cut off the roots at 3 1/4". And I cut 12" off my head, keeping about 1 1/4 " of hair. So, I am all trimmed up.

I am interested in what other people do. so chime in. I have more aloes to pot up and they all probably have masses of roots. I want to try different methods.

I don't usually remove the old soil... just stick it in a larger pot with new soil... a lot less messing with roots that way. Still, most aloes tolerate a good deal of root hack..... but some do not.
