Root trimming an Aloe striata?

I am repotting an Aloe striata. It came out all in a huge brick of roots. I had to get rid of most of there finer roots to get rid of the old played out soil. My question is how much of the root should I whack off. I was thinking about half of them. I usually just make up something and hope that will do. Usually it does fine. Is there an official number out there in official aloe land? does a guy like ISSDR (sp?) have an opinion? I was thinking that it maybe good to do more and force the plant to grow new roots. These roots might be old and bruised due to removing the soil. Thoughts anyone. We have not had a root trimming discussion in awhile. NOTE. I do let the beast callous over before I plant it.
