This is a good-sized Echeveria - the rosette is about 6" or more in diameter and it's about 10" tall. Here's a shot from the top:

Any ideas about the species?

It's not a species, but an intergeneric hybrid: x Graptoveria 'Fred Ives' (Graptopetalum paraguayanse X Echeveria gibbiflora). It is a fast grower, and shows wonderful color which changes with the seasons and amount of light. In mid-winter it can be blue, and in summer it will become purple and tan. A fast grower, it's very puppiferous. Rosettes can reach up to 12-inches in diameter. Looks great as a clump.

Oh, that's neat! So it formed an offset from which the flower will emerge? How can you tell?
