growing media in desert pavilion in brooklyn botanical garden

hi all,i took a trip to the Brooklyn botanical garden.my favorite part is the desert pavilion.i always wonder
what do thy use as a growing media there?
is it growing into a the ground or just like a big open raised bed?
how a person could accomplish something like that?
if any knows of good books about the subject,please share.

An advanced degree as a horticulturist, a few chats with Mr. Hammer and other colleges.

advanced degree in horticulturist is very useful for sure.i asked because when i checked the media they have on the ground-where all the cactus growing-it was dry light color on top but dark moist under.remind me with turface.can it be growing on turface only?i have no space or funds to create something like that.just curiosity and interest on the subject.

my main question was if anyone knows what kind of media they used on the ground of the pavilion?they grow all the cactus into the ground but the ground reminds me with turface we use in pots.could they amend the top foot or so with turface and pebbles ?i moved the layer a little bit and it was moist and cold under.
reread the first post.what ever you could answer will be helpful

That looks like the pumice I use. Hard to tell though.

eg,

The rock on top (top dressing) is decomposed granite. Below is likely sandyish loam, but as you're in Brooklyn and can go to the Garden (lucky you!), I'd agree with Danielle's suggestion and ask them - they're engaging folk.

oh i haven't check in for a while and THANK YOU ALL for the answer.you know danielle while your suggestion is simple i haven't even thought about it thank you for pointing that out.
cactusmcharris decomposed granite?it does look like pebbles.being is brooklyn has a lot of pros.we could hardly get grit or pumice for what folks on the west coast pay.i will shoot them an email post the answer here when i get it.

Our decomposed granite in texas orangeish. It has a lot of iron rich clay in it.
