Grafting is used for various reasons. Sometimes because a plant is very hard to maintain on its own roots, sometimes for growth.

For some more info, do a search with the words 'Peter Lapshin graft cactus'. If that doesn't get you to the page, throw in the word 'Russian'. Surely that will get you to his page. Not my taste in cacti, but, Vive la difference.
