| Hello!
I'm a novice and recently acquired a golden torch. It's on the window sill in my apartment and gets sun, eastern facing.
Recently I've noticed a few instances of black spots, occuring more frequently recently. In the past month, I've only watered it once.
Please see the attached picture, is this something i should be concerned about? Should I water the plant more?
thanks! |

| I think that's Trichocereus spachianus, and if the damage stays small, I'd suggest you don't need to excise the spot, but if it gets larger, get a clean knife and cut it out - if it does and you don't, it will rot out the whole plant. |

| how much should i cut? like i said, i'm pretty novice :) excise just that spot? or cut the whole trunk above? i'm guessing it's the former!! |

| Yeah, the former! Just excise that spot, dont cut the whole trunk! But that is a big enough cactus, if you topped it (and got rid of the black spot) and let the cut scar you could root the top and make a new cactus :) |

| B, Only if it gets larger, IMO, as it might heal itself (an optimistic view, I must admit), but you want to make sure you have a clean, sharp knife, some isopropyl alcohol (75% is fine, to spray the knife as you cut / at the end of cutting) and some wound dusting powder (like cinnamon or sulfur powder) - the last isn't absolutely essential but it aids in the healing process after you perform the excision equivalent of 'Get thee out, Satan'. |

| keep the knife clean with the alcohol especially on your last cut. Their should be NO coloration or any weirdness in the new flesh. |

| Is this at all contagious to other cacti ? Should a plant with this be quarantined from other plants ? |
