Barely missed the Gasteria's flower show this year--bummer! But yes, it's such a nice plant. Show quality.

Saw a small Gasteria plant I wasn't familiar with-- it was labeled as 'Big One,' and while I've seen 'Big Boy,' I don't believe I've seen 'Big One' on the Web. (I know I recall 'Peg's Big Boy' via Jeff's big beauty he has). I don't know that the G. I saw, albeit it was pretty small still, necessarily showed close enough of a resemblance to in fact be a 'Big Boy.' Had a nice somewhat fat-leaved look going, less speckled markings and a slightly lighter green than I've seen pictured, but still looks to me that G. bicolor would be one of the parents. I'll be interested to see a larger specimen if the grower gets one in.

I felt obligated, almost, to come home with that gorgeous K., Rosemarie! You never see it out there, great leaves, and babies at the soil to give away later? Yes, please.

Colleen, the only time I've seen K. prolifera was behind one of the buildings in Balboa Park. Of course, I had to figure out its ID at the time. I suppose it could be considered a "passalong" plant, but I don't know any (yet) who grow it.

Oh, it's a total score, I know. That G. grows like a sloth. I don't normally shell out 20 bucks, but it was worth it.

K. prolifera produces plantlets on the midrib but only when the plant is in poor shape. The usual method to force plantlet formation for some Kalanchoe is to remove a (pinnate?) leaf and place on soil (I'd usually remove a leaf and just put it in dark place for several days). Yale

Thank you very much for that information, Yale. I otherwise wouldn't have been aware of the conditions necessary for it to produce plantlets on the midrib. Interesting stuff. When in poor shape--I never would have guessed.

Like Nasturtiums, these Kalanchoes don't want coddling. IIRC, the Kalanchoe (another weed in San Diego) has fragrant, light pink-coloured flowers. And the Gasteria....yum, yum, yum.
