The purple color is from the sunlight. I do see some green in the center. Next, your pot is neat but does it have a drain hole? Next, you may want to check the roots. These are winter growers and don't want a ton of water so the roots might be not so good. If there are nice white roots, your plant will do fine but I might move it to a location that doesn't get direct sun mid-day. Hopefully others will have some suggestions.

Mine does this every year in the summer. It's weird, but just keep on with your routine. Perhaps water a little more lightly than usual. One day in October or November, seemingly overnight, you're going to turn around and it's going to be fat and bright green again. I'll go find the photos of a few pups I pulled off of my H. retusa.

Another strange thing: I have several smaller plants ... all from the same parent plant. Some behave this way in the summer, and some don't! They live on different sides of the building, so it could have something to do with light.

And finally, 1/22/14. By January everything was back to fat and happy. I think they just go dormant in the summer.

Nice! Seems like they're pretty tough. I got a H. retusa just 2 weeks ago, hopefully it will be as happy as yours!

Since you mentioned gnats - is there lots of organic matter in your mix? That's what is attracting gnats, especially if wet.

That pot is a changing mix, though it's always fairly fast-draining ... I use it to root and then gift/rehome pups off of larger plants. The fungus gnat culprit was an African Violet nearby. One gets treated, they all get treated (note the healthy serving of Mosquito Bits in one photo). I've been gnat-free for a long time... fingers crossed it stays that way!
