Hardy Opuntia - advice please

Hi all,
I bought this plant a number of years ago and it has sat out in the border through snow, frosts, -12C, freezing winds and after a wet winter seems to have rotted at the base and got pulled out the ground by an animal. I have temporarily put it in a pot on the patio until I find out what to do with it now and it seems to have burst into life again with lots of new growth. I did wonder about splitting it to have two or more plants? Or not risk doing that and just leave it as it is? Should I bury the base of it deeper?
