New to Jade Plants

Good morning. I am a newbee to Jade plants and would appreciate any info you would care to share.
I was given a four inch pot containing three sturdy looking trunks of Jade. They range in size from 7-1/2 to 9-1/2" tall and are very straggly looking. They are planted in regular soil.
I have been reading about "Al's gritty soil" please what does this gritty soil contain? And, also how does one cut back or trim Jade to make it look fuller?
Any information you can provide will be well received, because believe me I have no clue as to how to proceed with this plant....Thanks
