I always remove plants I buy from their mix. Wash the roots as much as I can to get off all of the debris and put them in my own gritty mix.

I agree with this, except I wouldn't allow the roots to dry. A damp, porous soil is the ideal environment for roots. Letting them dry out just puts more stress on them. You can cut off any obviously dead roots. Then replant in gritty mix and water.

I agree with Chris.....do not let roots dry out. It is a myth that letting succulent roots dry is good. They are better than most plants at tolerating it, but it is not good. This myth comes from the age old practice of using poorly drained mixes, particularly those based around peat moss. As stated in every response, look into a gritty type mix, either the original recipe, or a variation of it.
