Wow! Other people on this site are way more experienced than I am so I won't offer any advice but just want to comment on how beautiful your plant is. Enjoy!

It is tender and likes sun - Partial shade. Cactus . It is hardy to 32. It's pads look more like Consolea rubescens, but they are similar. I think it can take a bit of summer moisture but keep it fairly dry in winter. I water mine once a week but I am in Central Texas and it is hot and dry out there. It does grow in Florida so it must like their moisture and humidity as long as it has good drainage.

Thanks Icadena and Wantonamara, I really appreciate your input. Wantonamara you are spot on. Looking at the link you put up and other images I have googled, it definitely appears to be a rubescens. It's been wrongly labelled by the garden centre. Oh well at least I now know which plant I'm dealing with lol
