prickly pear cactus

Hi!

I received another unwanted plant from a coworker (unwanted by them - not me!). I believe it is a prickly pear cactus. Unfortunately, I left my phone at home so I cant post a picture until later tonight. My coworker told me she received it as a gift and has been trying to kill it for years. So, it is in unkept shape, but not that bad. Soil is definitely too wet and it will be put in gritty mix this evening. My question is, this guy is really top heavy. Like falling over in the container heavy. Should I go ahead and remove some of the top segments and see if I can get them to root? Or is it too late in the year for that? The alternative is to just pot it up with some supports and let it tough it out until spring. Or... if you have any alternatives let me know.

Thanks!!!

ps. I will post a picture later this evening. I am at work then class until 7:30 central time, but I just wanted to see if anyone would have some advice between now and then.
