Indian Fig Cactus breaking

Hi. I got a 4 foot piece of Indian Fig that I planted 5 years ago. Since then it's grown quite well but it's had a large piece break off every summer for the past 3 years. The portions that have broken off range from 2 feet to some arms that were 3.5 feet. This could be one large Indian Fig if I hadn't lost all these arms. Is this normal? If not, what's the problem and how do I correct it? Thanks in advance for any help your can provide.

A picture would help a lot, but Opuntias do make a habit of generating new plants when their limbs break off (intentionally or otherwise).

Here's a picture of some broken arms. Every year since I planted it, it has had pieces this large break off and I don't know why. The first year I braced it until it rooted itself but haven't done that since.
