A few new Aloes

My sister got this for me as a recent birthday gift. It is a Tim Harvey hybrid.

Fantastic shades of green.

She got me another Tim Harvey hybrid too...

As well as an itty bitty A. ramosissima seedling.

I also recently bought this A. fleurentiniorum, a slow growing, but quite interesting species from Yemen.

I also got a little bonus clump of A. bakeri.

WOW, nice aloes!!!

That A. fleurentiniorum really is an interesting little critter isn't it? Fascinating.

Nice haul!

I like them all! The first Harvey hybrid is dramatic and different. Does it have a name?

A. fleurentiniorum will develop lots of red/bronze color with more sun. Slow growing is right. One of my favorite species.

Tim doesn't name any of his hybrids. He is sort of s stickler for accuracy and rigor. For a plant name to be valid, it must be published with a description. He has never done such with any of his hybrids (nor has Kelly Griffin) so he won't attach a name to them since it would be invalid. He has plans to open an online store, but for now, the only way to get your hands on his plants is to attend some local shows or visit him at his house.

A. fleurentiniorum doesn't really fit my Aloe collection goals. It is slow and will ultimately be a big plant, which are both sort of opposites of what I really want. However, between the interesting juvenile form, great color potential, and being from Yemen, I had to buy it anyway. Someday I would love to be able to put it in the ground!

It must be nice living in Aloefornia. :-) They all look very nice!

Very impressive plants. I really like the first one. It really has that wow effect. I would like to own some nice hybrids but in the midwest opportunities to buy them are slim to none.

*drool* *wipe wipe* *drool some more*

They're all beautiful but I adore the fleurentiniorum!

That first Aloe is almost unrecognizable today it has changed color so much. Getting it in some good strong sun, plus the colder night we've been getting has really set the colors off! I'll see if I can get a picture of it in the next day or two.

Nancy, have you ever seen a picture of mature A. fleurentiniorum (check out the first result)? They end up as sort of gangly, messy looking things, not quite as appealing as when they are still small.

Jo,the ones you sent me are off and running-what was the name? For the others who are wondering, they resemble the last in Jo's pics-the A.bakeri
A.ramo-etc, that I bought in spring as a wee plant, greenhouse kept and with flat leaves...has done pretty good outdoors in the same pot. Plumped up,added more leaves.Just hard to imagine it getting anywheres close to Cactus Jordi's monster plants.

I didn't know Tim Harvey was selling plants, or was hybridizing them. If its the same person he is a member of my club. The plant looks very similar to KZ plants X's. Norma

Nice collection. And your sister is too good at gift giving! Mine is always trying to reform me by buying me stuff like makeup and clothing. I'd much rather have an aloe.

At least you can enjoy your slow grower for awhile. They grow up too fast though don't they?
Tally HO!

Stan: I thought I sent you A. squarrosa for your Socotra raft, but I'm not positive.

Norma: Tim has at least a table or two of plants to sell at all of the major shows. He has been doing Aloe hybrids for at least a few years now.

As promised, here is a photo I took of the Tim Harvey hybrid. Amazing how much the color has changed.

The change is even more dramatic in the golden light of the setting sun.

Joscience,

What camera are you using? What settings? How many megapixels?

Thanks.

RE: A few new Aloes

I shoot with a Canon 350D (digital Rebel Xt). Nine times out of ten I use the EF 24-105mm lens, but I also post s fair number of photos shot with an EF-S 60mm Macro.

I always shoot RAW, and use Adobe Bridge to do all the post processing. I almost always shoot in aperture priority and bust out the tripod when the lighting dictates it.

My camera is 8 megapixels. Unless you are doing a lot of large format printing, that is more than enough. The push to higher and higher resolution sensors doesn't make a lot of sense to me in consumer level cameras...
