Unfortunately your soil is too peaty/organic - it needs to be cut with 50% perlite / pumice / other porosity-inducing agents for it to grow well. It's also overpotted. A smaller pot and lots of light will help return it to a vibrant colour. You'll want to not water it for a few days after repotting.

It is indeed the right plant, but is not growing in the proper conditions, as stated above. If you make the changes noted above and be sure it's getting tons of light (south-facing windows are the only possibility for growing succulents well indoors, and even so light can be inadequate if there is anything - trees, etc. - in the way) the plant will start to look the way you want.

The good news is, you didn't get duped :)

My soil mix says it's already 50% perlite, are you sure I should add another 50%?

It may say it's already 50% but it's not :-) Perlite is readily visible as small, white, rock-like pieces. I don't see any sign of that.

Personally I like a very fast draining cactus-type soil mix for all my succulents. Very light on the peat, heavy on the sand and perlite or pumice. I use a locally available aloe mix but something like the Gritty mix described on the Container gardening forum would work well also. At the very least, dose up your potting soil with more perlite or pumice and coarse sand or poultry grit.

I recently switched all my plants to Als gritty mix and they are thriving! With the cold weather I thought they'd go dormant but I keep finding new growth. I strongly suggest looking into it if you want the most from your plants.

It is definitely looking better. Did you put it into smaller pot? And the potting mix looks better too. Did you use lots of perlite?

Yes I bought perlite & mixed it into the soil for all of my plants & it's in one of my tiniest pots (about two inches)
