RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Nice plant! How old is it from the leaf you started? Count me in, I'd love to have one. I have a green Jade already, but these are indeed not easy to find. Let me know where to send my address and thanks for sharing :-)

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

I bought one like this last summer, and its grown about 10000% since then!
These are really healthy, and fast growers, so its nice of you to offer this to folks!

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

I would be interested in a cutting or leaf.

Is there a way to send you an email privately?

Thanks,

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Here is my e-mail...mikerno_1@yahoo.com

Privately I will respond to you, and I promise all of you. No one will miss out who responds and I will send them to where they need to ship to...,that is if you all promise me not to pinch anything off plants without asking at any of the Walmarts or nurseries anymore..lol

It is a "pleasure" to give them a place to live and make others here happy!..I hope down the road with all the wealth of info here, you be able to grow them beautifuly and healthy, and then post them as they grow here..;-)

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

By the way, if I am not mistaken, I planted this plant about 3 years ago...I grew it in full sun on a window sill at work here in New England, and fed it FP once a week recently if I remembered, and dyno-gro prior to that..
I also let days goes by without watering in the gritty mix that Al talks about on the container forums..I ignored it many times in the watering deparment. It is one of the least worrisome plant that I have.
It grew twice as fast in that mix than in a peat based one..Just a tip...

Yes inlovewithhoyas, it is one of the ones I told you about. You see, you can do it too..:-)!

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

You have mail! :)

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Mike I would like a leaf or cutting if you still have some you can Email me at makipp1@aol.com thanks robert

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Mike, you are a very generous (and brave) person for putting an offer out like that!

As a matter of curiosity, when all is said and done, would you post back with how many people asked for cuttings?

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Hi Mike,

That is a very nice plant you have there. Is it very common? I have never seen one like it. I would have love a leaf or cutting of your plant but it seems like so much trouble to ship that across to Southern CA if it is common.

Anyways, it's very nice of you to offer. There are lots of very nice people in this site indeed.

Have a great day!

Sandra

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

I never saw one like this, until that year when I visited my uncles Doctor's office. The secratary didn't know where he got it and gave me a leaf..:-)
I have seen a different form of it, smaller leaves. I have also seen them just ordinary green and white..But none with the varying colors this one has. Many different shades......
There isn't a nursery in my area that has even seen one...There must be some out there, but where? lol
I brought it that nursery, and some of the employees asked for a few leaves..Probably so they could start some, then sell..lol
I felt bad when I said I can't...
I think mailing out a leaf or two will cost the price of a stamp..No worries Sandra..

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

You have mail :-) Wow, 3 years from a leaf!? That's impressive!

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

If you have enough, I would like a leaf please.

Thanks, Nana

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Yoohoo mike you got mail...lol

Hope youlre enjoying your jade. I really enjoyed reading the story about your jades journey. =)

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

YO....It was brought to my attention that a small jade next to the main one is green!!! Yikes..

I thought it was a part of the main one, possibly turning green and loosing it color, but thank GOD no..Had quite a scare there..Thanks..lol

It occured to me that I started another one right next to it last year, by leaf.. I forgot about it...
I have another Jade, green that is at least 15-20 years old, and when I trimmed that one, I just stuck the leaf on top of the soil..
I never pulled it out. Time to up root..
The first one that comes here after this post and wants it, can have it...It has a great start..

I will post the mother plant asap..:-)

Have a great day everyone!

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Hi Mike, I will take it....
maybe it will be good luck to start the other one...
what will be the best way to start a leaf?, I have started cuttings but never a leaf...
linda

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Several different ways...Just NEVER let water get to it..It can rest on top of moist anything, as long as it is hitting full sun, but never wet..

Actually in the wild, they just fall off the mother plant onto crevices, sand, dirt, whatever and sit there for weeks on end without a drop of rain, and just start to sprout roots. Usually within a month or two..Miracle, isn't it?

I just lay some leaves on sand only, no water, dry sand,in the sun on a window sill, and they sprout roots..
I have rested leaves on top of the soil next to the main plant, not buried, and they grew, even if the plant got watered and the soil was moist for a couple days there after.
I remember one that fell into the crevice of the window sill, and it grew roots..
The key is not to bury it into any soil, and not to keep it wet..The moisture in the leaf itself will give it plenty of life to create it's own new roots, even on dry soil...;-)

By the time the leaf drys up and shrivels, it will have roots. But it will rot if left in damp soil..

Let me know how it goes..k

You get the cutting....:-)

Mike

 o
RE: Oh ya...Rooting

Oh YA!!!

One more thing...Sometimes I have used ROOT TONE. This seems to make them root alot faster...

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Rooting hormone is unnecessary (& in my opinion a waste of money). These plants simply do not need it.

I have had single Jade leaves start rooting on my RADIATOR. No mix, no moisture, NO NOTHING! Just time & being left alone will usually do the trick!

I think folks asking for single leaves are likely to be disappointed (sorry Mike) w/ just one. It could well be that by the time you get the leaf & really get used to doing NOTHING to it, it will have wrinkled & dried up & died.

If it were me making the offer to share leaves, I'd send a minimum of 3-5 leaves per person. Any less is likely to yield disappointment.

Sorry Mike, I'm not trying to de-rail your offer; but rather to make it more realistic & less prone to disappoint.

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Nothing to be sorry about...Thanks for your input..

You should'nt have to opologize for wanting to see ayone not disappointed, and for your ideas......:-)

 o
RE: Pirot girl,

Ps...Now that I have a sec more,

Who said I was only going to send one? lol

Even at that, well protected, one leaf would make it longer than a few days wihtout dying..You know that. You have left them on your radiator unprotected. I have found them to root in a window crack. I have rooted one after days on a table in no soil at all. half wrinkled up..
A couple of days in the mail won't hurt a leaf. You know that..Tough things they are..

But still very thoughtful. If you want any, just let me know too, since you were kind enough to care..:-)

If you all get more than one leaf, you can blame it on pirot girl now....You owe all owe her a huge debt of gratitude..:-)

Thanks, and I hope you are well Karen....God bless..

 o
RE: One more thing...

One more thing......

Pirot girl....You never contradict yourself, but catch others doing it all the time....What happended here?...lol
Guess we are all human...:-)

"I have had single Jade leaves start rooting on my RADIATOR. No mix, no moisture, NO NOTHING! Just time & being left alone"

"It could well be that by the time you get the leaf & really get used to doing NOTHING to it, it will have wrinkled & dried up & died".

I think they will be ok in the mail left alone with NOTHING done to them for a couple of days..

You gave me a laugh today....I needed it...Take care and be safe...;-)

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

i sent you an email....let me know if you get it!

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

I'd like some leaves to root if you have any left.

Wow, I've never seen a variegated jade that looked quite like that one; it's so beautiful! I too would love some leaves, Mike. I'm sending you an email right now! : D

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

not to sound mean....but you said you did NOTHING to the leaves and they made roots but
you say if NOTHING is done to them they will die?!?!?!?

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Come on
ilovecacti_grower,

"not to sound mean".

You wanted to mean after reading this on your thread..

"You appear to be speaking out of both sides of your mouth".

No need for getting even or making someone feel bad..Not here...That person has much to offer here...And is human.

I respect you for your ability to be kind after that thread too....You deserve an opology by many for being attacked, but at the same time, I am proud of you for not being scared away from these forums and lurkers who are hell bent on making others feel bad by making themselves heard, and pushing others..For holding back more than you could of, and being brave, I am sending you more than I intended too.:-)

This is a great forum, let's keep it that way. And anyone else who thinks of taking any sides here, please don't. It's about being human and being able to learn from our mistakes, fumbling up on our words, criticizing where we don't intend to hurt a poster, and succeeding and failing at what we do. We are here to help and overlook...

So far I have no one to be mad at, or hate, even though some here probably don't like me, even though I have been pushed.. We are all entitled to our opinions.
Remember, we are not here to make friends, if we do by chance we are lucky, blessed, as I ahve been, but we are here because we all have one thing in common, we love our plants..:-)

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

your right...sorry i dont know why i said that!......your right about what we have in common

oh well.... sry about that pirate girl

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Hi Mike, just curious, what are you going to do to your beautiful plant? pluck off must of the leaves, or are you cutting it all back to get the trunk fatter??? just curious...linda

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

I'm kidding of course, but if all of those leaves are neglected properly, it could happen...

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Hi every one, My name is cAROL,i am a lurker,i really just stopped in to see if i could find any info,on Sedums, not knowing where else to look, and i am fascinated by the way you have grown your beautiful Jade plant from a leaf.
I had one Years ago.
My daughter got a piece from my son, who lives in Cal.,and it is growing nicely, since i am here, may i ask you how to trim them?I had no idea you could trim up a Jade plant.
This has been a fun read, has any one send pictures yet?
Thanks guys, its been educational.
cAROL

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Oh yes..You can..

In fact I trim mine at the knobes, or just about where another leaf can grow from. I like to trim according to what kind of shape I want.

Then root the cuttings..

And you are very welcome....It is good to see ones like you be a part instead of lurking....:-)!

Mike..:-)

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Carol,

For Sedum info. just do a search on Sedum & you'll find lots of info; you'll need to determine WHICH Sedum you've got. You could also check the pix of them at Desert-tropicals.com.

Mike,

Could you perhaps mean you trim them at the 'nodes' (the name for the joints or knuckles of the plant where new growth would come from on these)?

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Yeah..lol

I had a feeling I might have used the wrong word after I posted...I am glad someone understood..:-)

Thanks PG..

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Linda, here is a photo of the mother plant of all the cuttings I sent out as you wanted to see..:-)
It still looks ok?

RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

hi mike i think i found your plant, what do you think? i found it at www.cactuscollection.com. in there list of plants they sell.

Here is a link that might be useful: mike's plant?

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Mike want to say thank you about reminding people not to pinch off leaves when they are in a nursery, WalMart, Tarket or any other place. What are you shipping these in, what kind of box, I don't need one but I thank you for offering. I'll be glad to send you one of my special ones if you want, C. ovata 'Ruby' Norma

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Mike,
the cuttings are growing excellently! They're all outdoors now on my eastern deck, and coloring nicely from the night-time temps in the 30°F's and the day-time temps in the 70°F's!!! If I have a current pic, I'll post it to the update Thread.

Jade Man,
we've been calling this Jade 'Peek' for a while, name provided by Norma. I can't recall, but there might be some subtle difference in the striping or variegation between this sport and the others.

Norma,
could you post a picture of Crassula ovata 'Ruby'?
I would truly love to compare images of a Jade from my collection, which you tentatively identified as 'Ruby' a few years ago. It is a small-leaf Jade if that helps narrow it down.

Josh

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

How is everyones Jades doing? I would love to see a few..

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Hi Mike....

Very nice, Julia!
Your cuttings have grown well!

Mike, my cuttings are healthy and happy!
The cutting that flowered during the winter is finally sending out a new pair of leaves.

Josh

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Linda, so sorry to hear that.

Nice Julia!

Josh, glad to hear yours is putting out some leaves.

Here's mine. Mike I gave my sister a cutting of your Jade...so add Las Vegas to the list of places your cuttings went to :o)
It is doing well so far.Mine lost all its pretty red colors, but so has most of my Jades, they are also pretty much dormant right now. It is waaay to hot and humid for them. I even had to move them away from the sun...its been 100° for several days now.

 o
RE: Would anyone like a leaf to root? Pics

Such a sexy Jade deserves to be on stage in Vegas! ;)
Great plant, Nancy!
