Cactus Rot

A few weeks ago, I went to Home Depot to return something and noticed they were selling cacti. I have always wanted a cactus, so I bought a small spiny cactus. A week or so ago, I noticed it was turning brown and soft at the base and sinking into the pot, so I went to a similar forum and realized my cactus had root rot. I thought this was strange, since I had never watered it before, but when I removed it from the pot, the soil it was in was SOAKED. I followed the instructions on the forum to remove the rotted parts of the plant with a sterilized knife and to allow the cactus to dry for a few days, but now it looks like the problem has gotten worse. Is there anything I can do to save my cactus?
