Good succulents for rocky soil

I live in southern California--Orange, so between the coast and desert. We have REALLY rocky soil, so it has proven to be a pain to grow much of anything in the native soil other than our sago palms which seem to love it. As for succulents, we've had luck with brown bean. By rocky soil, I mean more of rock and then there is some dirt from the rock that would be our "soil". We are having a large patio installed and there is about an 8 inch gap between the concrete and the vinyl fence. In the past, that area has been a mecca for weeds, so I'd like to actually plant it with some succulents, preferably ones that won't need a sprinkler line to them, and, if they spread, even better. I'd like something other than brown bean to change it up and nothing like aloe with spikes on it as it will be in a place our kids are playing. Thanks for your suggestions.
