I saw this at my local nursery on Saturday, and I came so close to buying it, I went back and picked it up twice!

Looks like its pretty darn good. For the moment, I have been using an orchid mix that is locally available, pine bark, lava stone and spag peat chunks. Only problem is the pieces are huge(1/2) and have to be broken up and crushed, then rescreened before use.

I think I just need to break down and order some repti-bark from amazon and be done with it, since I can easily get everything else needed for 1-1-1 or 5-1-1 here.

Imagine it might be cheaper, Smish, to just order the bark from a orchid supply vendor. While the bark in the orchid mixes found at a BBS are typically going to be the big chunks, many types of orchids or seedlings need a much smaller bark size.

Hoffman bonsai mix has been discussed a few times.
While it is pretty good product, it still has a lot of fine material....and that means perched water. It is constructed of very similar ingredients, but not as much attention is paid to particles. So...I'd recommend screening it over insect screen (1/16 inch) before committing it to pots.

As Paul said, if you can get the ingredients, and have the time, you will make a better mix on your own. You have more control over the final product. It will also be cheaper in the long run.

I completely agree. It will need screened.

I hadn't seen it discussed before. I saw it, and was curious, so I brought it home. I'll still make my own mix as i feel it is better. I thought some members might like a slightly easier alternative. Especially if you only have a few plants.
