How to get euphorbia lactea cutting to root

Hi, all. I took this lovely cutting of a lactea a month ago, but my first attempts to root (after letting callus, of course) failed and ended in simply a brown trunk. I cut off the brown part with sterilized shears and sprayed cinnamon on the cut. What should I do next? Bone dry soil for weeks? Should I buy rooting hormone (I have none)? Any advice would be appreciated!
