It looks like an Aechmea fasciata/aka here in the UK as an 'Urn Plant' which is a variety of Bromeliad, This family of plants are not actually succulents. Hope this helps.

Like most rot, it is likely being over watered. Just water in the cup and let what little spills over give a bit of water to the soil. If you keep it alive long enough, it will produce pups after the flower fades and the mother plant will die.

Thanks all of You for quick response and pictures!

Very nice plant! I had one of these. The flower lasted a long time. I removed a couple of pups that had grown. The plant still looked good, so I left it in the pot. And I got more pups. I ended up getting 12 pups from the mother plant! So now I have 6 growing, and 6 friends who are growing the gifts that I gave them.
