Honestly, I have the opposite issue in Central Florida here. Mine grow great and color up nicely in full sun during our winter. When summer hits however, the sun and heat are too much and they usually end up with leaf burn and rot due to our heavy rain season. If I put them in more shady conditions, they tend to get etiolated. If I were you, I invest in a grow light and setup a table indoors to protect from the cold months but still give them light they crave. I purchased a 140W LED full spectrum light this spring and my succulents have never looked so good moving into the winter/cooler months. I was skeptical at first as LED grow lights have gotten a bad rep until recently, but I was presently surprised that mine remained compact and some even flowered this summer.

My hat are off to all you northerners at your handwork at keeping your plants healthy. Bikerdoc. You should take a picture from the same place , next spring just before you take the plants back out.

I have no suggestions to give.

Mine do fine in the sunroom; less light, less water and cooler temps until about March. That's when they want to etoliate because the sunroom gets warmer, but the light level is still low.

And also have to really start watching for spider mites in early spring. Many of my plants have battle scars from those little sucking machines. Good air circulation and misting helps, but I live in the desert so you may not have spider mite issues.

Not perfect, but better than basement at this point.
Howards set up is good for basement, I was planning on something similar.
