| This plant came to me as Aloe distans, but online research shows it now lumped with A. mitriformis and a few others as Aloe perfoliata. I bought it last year because of its striking yellow teeth and red leaves in harsh conditions. They are massive, very thick and stout. It's a summer flowering Aloe, most bloom winter and spring. It is known as the Jewelled Aloe, the Golden Tooth Aloe, and the Rubble Aloe. It spreads out laterally for several meters, making it good ground cover. Habitat photos show it in rocky outcrops. From the Cape region of S. Africa, this photo was taken July 20, 2011 in my garden.

Brad, Before the flowers were open, the bud head looked like a flying saucer from the 1950s space movies? That's Aloe distans - I think that's what you have, and it is a desirable landscape plant - it takes care of itself, doesn't it?

I think I killed one in the last cold front. It was nice. Still modest.

Beautiful plants. You growers in zone 8 and up really make me jealous.

Us growers in Zone 8 have to sweat it through the winters. Lately we have to do what all you northerners do. Bring them in. We have had some exceptionally cold winters. For twenty five years, it was throw a towel on them. Now it is rake leaves around them, double bag, pray the wind does not blow things around at 2 in the morning and then collect the slimy dead and throw them in the pit. I am in envy too.
