Propagating pachyphytum

I have an established indoor planting of Pachyphytum oviferum. One stem seems to have elongated as well as losing its leaves - they drop like flies if touched much - resulting in about a 6" bare stem with the rosette of leaves on top. The rosette has sparked some new starts.
I have rooted some of the previously fallen leaves but what I really want to know is what will happen if I chop off the tall stem. Will it sprout new growth from the base, like you can with dracaena? And will the severed stem generate roots and can be replanted in a shorter form?
I did Google but couldn't find any specific answers.
