Any advance treatment to bring in for winter?

I have loads of succulents in containers. Last year I was told by a garden center employee "keep them dry, doesn't matter if they freeze." Well I'm in central NY, so freeze they did. And I lost 90% of them. (They went into an unheated shed.)

This year I bought more and I'm trying to be smarter. I'll bring them into a downstairs unheated garage where it'll get into the 40s but not freeze. There are lots of windows, but no direct sun will fall on the plants.

Truth be told, these guys have flourished under my neglect. I potted them and put them outside and pretty much ignored them other than to look at. When we had a heat wave in July I watered them once a week for a couple weeks, but that's it.

My big question before bringing them in is: Do I need to do any kind of pretreatment for potential pests? Should I go thru a "sun withdrawal" procedure with them like I'm doing with my citrus trees? Anything else I should be aware of before I kill another batch of plants? Thanks

Becky
