Some will grow for several years in the same size pot as others would grow better in a bigger pot after a few short months to every second growing season( more or less)

Your free to explore options and experamint with sizes with out ' rules'. In general don't under pot and don't over pot and always have a spare same size pot that you had over or under potte Standardly some may need pot size increased by one or more inches
