For IMCF, Carrying Plants to Canada

Hi IMCF,

I generally take plants back and forth across the Canada/USA border, and a number of things are useful in getting them thither and hither.

1) never have them in soil, always in bare root

2) if you have to fly internationally, be prepared to stand in line for agricultural inspection. Be assertive in the fact that these plants will never spread and become invasive, and also point out the fact that most of them wouldn't anyway because of our winters up here.

3) If you fly internationally, do declare them on your customs form and see #1.

4) If you drive across the border, adhere to #1, but Canadian customs never asks about plants, and only rarely do they ask about the Big Three (tobacco, alcohol and firearms).

5) I've never been asked about succulent plants (apples, yes, Adeniums, no) when I'm going to the States from Canada and carrying them to mail to friends down south, but once again, see #1.

6) Some nurseries will mail to you in Canada from the US, but the certificates and postage are expensive - better to order seed from them or have your plants mailed to a US address near you.

If you've any more questions, please ask.
