Search for "hardy cactus" on ebay - there are many people offering cuttings and seeds for high desert varieties that can take a great deal of cold. There's a ton of cold hardy cacti out there. Did you know that some opuntia are actually native to GA & SC?

It is not the cold that you have to worry about. It is the wet for some of the varieties. Of the opuntias. The list is huge. I grow O basilaris, O englemanii,O cacanapa var ellisiana, O macrodaisy, O spinisbacca, O rhodantha, O macrocentra, O chlorotica var violacia, O. ficus indicus (chancey), Then there ar the cylindropuntias. I have5 varieties of them. The list is endless. Maybe 40 varieties so far. Go to cold hardy cactus or intermountain cactus to take a look.
