Succulent drying up from bottom up

Hello,
I hope that someone can help me out! My succulent is drying up from the bottom up - it's turning brown and hard. I'm afraid that I don't know exactly what type of succulent I have - it's a thin, vine-like one that's about 8 inches long right now. About the first inch of it is dried up.

Sounds like root rot. have you got pictures. You might want to unearth it and check the condition of the roots. If they are goners, one might want to re root the plant if it is a rerooter. Pictures are good.
