Brittle prickly pear help

I had a few of the cactus pads stick to my leg today. I know that prickly pear cacti are easy to root, but I was wondering if it is possible to root them outdoors at this time of year. We haven't had a hard frost yet this year but we are supposed to be getting them soon, with a possibility of snow next week. So I was also wondering if it would be possible to keep them as a house plant this winter

I would root them indoors and plant them out next spring.

I doubt they root outdoors with frost coming. They may not root until spring, but the pads will be o.k. sitting in dry soil in cool conditions for several months. Before the spring equinox, the roots will form.
