Winter seed raising

Posted by cantharis UK (My Page) on

About Xmas time I have my winter seed raising - it is lovely to see life spring anew from the soil.
This year I have Ariocarpus confusus, A. bravoanus, A. scapharostrus and A. kotschoubeyanus (what makes you think I am a fan of Arios?).
I have ordered Astrophytum caput-medusae (have found it impossible to obtain a plant). And there will be few of my old favourite, Lophophora williamsii.

Good luck on the seeds - there are plenty of A. c.m. over in North America - it's a little odd it isn't more available in the EU.

I think the cost per seed is now less than $1 -- when it first came out it was >$20 per seed.

Here is a link that might be useful: Stigma of The Digit.

Yes, but legitimate nurseries cannot send plants from the US to the EU without CITES documentation and a phytosanitary certificate - prohibitively expensive so forget it.
But you are right, the seeds I have sourced are cheap enough now. Looking forward to germination.

Expensive perhaps, but not impossible to find. A quick search revealed that it is offered by at least four nurseries in EU.

I think if you click the link you'll find reputable nurseries (at least one) located in the EU with plants and seeds.

Thanks boys, but I am growing them from seed, just one species as part of my winter seed fest.

Hi folks. I am about to rig-up a new indoor seed-raising unit. Got myself about a dozen or so fluorescent lights (5' long = 1.5 m) wich should be OK for something like a 5' X 4' bench. Must finish harvesting & cleaning seeds first, though! T.

And I am getting a large harvest of tiny rare gasteria, pollinated by my personal Hummingbird. I haven't seen any hawothnia coming up, but the leaves of the Sansevieria are doing well, I am trying to start this species in water. It's like tissue culture. Norma
