Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!
| | |
Posted by jrmtl (My Page) on Mon, Nov 16, 09 at 9:14
| Hi all,
I have these two christmas cactus purchased last year and of which had small buds which eventually bloomed at x-mas time.
I kept the same pots and a watered them normally throughout the year and the plants looks healthy and strong.
Should I be expecting buds soon as it's mid-november and nothing yet?
I can send a picture if needed
Any tips or ideas ?

Mine is just starting to produce buds. Somewhere in the back of my mind it seems you have to hold water, provide dark? I can't remember but maybe Norma knows. I keep mine in fairly moderate shade for most of the year and ignore them. I've found they burn here if in more than early am sun. Tally HO! |

My Christmas Cactus didn't set buds until the middle of January (earlier this year). Continue to water your Christmas Cactus through the blooming period, then ease back on the watering after the bloom, when your CC is 'resting.' Josh |

| actually I do see some extremely small buds on some leaves but not on all, some leaf tips are a bit dry with no buds... So I should continue watering and maybe change to complete darkness ? |

| Darker Nights may help produce more buds. But if you say it's already forming buds there may be no need to move it now. Just wait a few more weeks and more buds should form, They always start forming a few buds then as the week goes by more continue to form thats what I've always noticed. I would say leave it where it is. |

| Depends on if it is a real Christmas cactus or a Thanksgiving cactus. The former don't start to produce buds until December, not for me anyway. |

| They don't really go by the calendar, tho' the way nurseries force them for the Holidays, one could think that. They seem to go more by when it's the right combination of cool & long nights (or short days). I grow Thanksgiving cacti & the one had for 6 yrs.+ that I lost last year, would bloom for New Years & sometimes a 2nd blooming in late February. I learned to bloom mine by accident when both light fixtures in my kitchen died at the same time. The lack of overhead light at night for 6 wks or so seemed to push them into bloom. |
RE: Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!

| Ok thanks for all the responses... So I guess just leave in the same place for now if I do indeed see some very minuscule buds |
RE: Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!
| | |
| OK then, I'd suggest same watering, don't fertilize now, don't change anything or even TURN the plant. Good luck! |

| Next year leave it outside until you get close to the first frost. The longer nights and cooler temperatures will set the buds. Once the buds start getting big bring inside and place in as cool a spot as you can. This method NEVER fails me. I have 2 thanksgiving cactus blooming right now and a third setting buds. |

| Dark, I knew it was something. It used to be recommended to put them in the closet for 4-6 weeks to get them to bloom. Never tried it. Mine get ignored & live outside year round. Tally HO! |

| Hi Beachplant, I think that you might be thinking of Poinsettias...the 6 weeks in the closet thing? I don't put mine in the closet, but I do keep it in a very dark location for 12-14 hours for about 4 weeks and my Poinsettias always rebloomed. But I'm not sure that is for CC's...but don't quote me as I'm very new to growing CC, TC's.Like you I grow my TC and CC mostly outside all year, except when they flower I like to bring them inside to enjoy! Tommyr, can I ask you when you say place the plant in as cool a place as you can...since I live in FL...what temps appx are you recommending after it sets buds? Our problem right now is...its still in the low 80's during the day and 60's, and sometimes mid 50's at night. Thanks! Good luck Jrmtl...hope yours blooms soon! If not you can always buy one that is blooming which is what I did this year since I lost mine,lol... |

| Hi Puglvrl! To help keep the buds from possible bud blasting AND make the flowers last longer. Cool temps keep flowers lasting longer. |
RE: Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!

| Thank you all for those tips ! Dark and cool place it is then |

| It is hard to find a cool spot most of the year isn't it? We just had a cold front go through so 51 last night! Yuck! It was cc/tc that you were supposed to put in the closet, I looked it up in an old houseplant book I have at the house. I never did that, I would forget the plant and find it dead if I tried that. Not to mention living in an old house there is NO closet space. Tally HO! |
RE: Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!

| Thanks for the checking that out for me, like you I wouldn't put it in the closet either. I KNOW I would forget it and like you said...find it dead,lol... I think I will stick with the shortening/cooler days technique, a lot safer my plants :o) |
RE: Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!

They certainly don't go into a closet in nature! I'll stick to the tried and true, as well! :o) Josh |

| This is the thread of the article that I found it is very old. http://cactus.biology.dal.ca/paulS/christmas/christmas.html I like this article because I could understand it. Many others did not like it. It is 8 pgs long and I someone puts it where it can be found again. I hope it will be used to help others who need it. **** It was written by Paul J. Brunelle Dec. 20 2001 There is a Epiphytic Plant Study Group (http.//www.epiphytic.co.uk I think it great because I am a beginner it is a precise article, with line drawing, and color pictures, making every very clear. | I just thought I would contribute what care my Thanksgiving Cactus gets. South bay window all year, gets filtered sun in summer and partial day sun in winter(When it's out!) I only turn it when it's not in bloom....and sometimes not at all. No dark treatment, no cool treatment(I think it gets naturally cool since it's close to a single pane window), It blooms faithfully at least twice a year, sometimes 3! Guess I'm doing something right. Here's a bloom a couple weeks ago..... |

| I'll say (you must be doing something right). How handsome & elegant -- thanks for the eye candy! I think I'll show THIS pic to my young TC cuttings so they'll have a good role model! |

| Mine didn't bloom at all this year. Last year at this time, it was LOADED with blooms. I haven't moved it or changed the way I've always watered it. I think I might need to re-pot it, though. Should I fertilize it? I never have. It really seems to thrive on neglect. |
RE: Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!

| I've had two for years and they are the most neglected of my plants. I put them out in May and they stay out in full sun until light frost. By then they are smothered in buds, usually mid Oct. in my zone. They do the same each year. It is the cold and short days which trigger buds. I have rarely fertilized them and the only water they get outside is rain. They do best with neglect. Jane |

| I just want to know if it really is a Christmas Cactus? What do the border of the leaves look like? Entire? (No spikes, smooth/even all the way around ) Norma |

| Hi Josh, SO pretty!! BTW, mind sharing how you got yours to bloom. I know you have it inside now...how cold does it get in the room at night and what temps during the day? I'm sure you have it next to a window by the looks of the picture. Appreciate it, I'm sure many here will love to hear how you got yours to bloom. We're all ears,lol...Thank You! |
RE: Christmas cactus help needed ... still no blooms ?!

| Yes, that is a real Christmas cactus. This is the time they ususally start to flower. |

| Kalanchoe are starting to flower now as well, they do keep them in the dark so they will flower this time of the year. They have flowers producing double or triples looking more like Roses. Norma |

Thanks, Pug! Well, the Christmas Cactus spent the whole summer on the back deck. I brought it back inside around September, I'd say. Since then, I've kept it in the same bright, sunny location by the back door. There is a cold draft from the constant opening and closing of the door, but the room is usually between 50°F and 60°F at night...much warmer during the day. In January of this year, the CC bloomed late....which I think was due to the fact that I'd pruned it in May (2008). This summer I did very minimal pruning (just to shape the Cactus, lighten its load, and obtain a few small cuttings). I don't know if there's a direct correlation, but I'll assume that an aggressive pruning may delay or minimize the onset of blooms....but might also lead to a more prolific bloom the following season. Searching for a name of a plant I found this on CC: "Plants start into growth in late summer and, after a period of short days with less than 12 hours of light, flower in winter. Too much light, even if it is artificial, can retard flowering. ...These shade-loving plants are known as Chrismas cacti in the Northern Hemisphere or winter-flowering cacti in the Southern Hemisphere. They need regular feeding when in active growth in summer and winter." Goes on to say that most are hybrids, flower colors afected by local light intensity, temp and the seasons, booms that open in Autumn are paler than winter flowers. From Brazil, 6 species. Also called lobster or crab cactus. (never heard that name before). The Complete book of Cacti & Succulents. Terry Hewitt. Must be why we were told to put in a closet, to get less daylight. Probably a better idea in the south then then the north as ya'll have rather short days this time of year anyway. Not that ours are so long but longer than yours. Tally HO! |
