Threatened Euphorbia species images

Hello all,

I am searching for images of threatened plant species from Madagascar on behalf of the ARKive project and was wondering if anyone had any images of Euphorbia species from Madagascar that we could include on our website (www.arkive.org).

ARKive - www.arkive.org - is a unique conservation initiative.

Films, photographs and audio recordings of the world’s animals, plants and fungi are being gathered into one centralised digital library. To date we have created digital multi-media profiles for over 4000 species, digitising and storing more than 30,000 still images and over 5000 videos. These important audio-visual records are being preserved and maintained for the benefit of future generations and are being made available via the ARKive website.

It is ARKive's current aim to compile audio-visual records for the 17,000-plus species currently threatened with extinction, according to the World Conservation Union's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

We are looking for media (moving footage, still images, audio) to depict each species' life history as comprehensively as possible. In order for us to achieve this aim we need help from as wide a variety of donors as possible and would like to be able to add you to our list of contributors.

The ARKive website acts as a showcase for image providers, displaying copyright and contact details with every image and links to each media donor's own web activities.

If anyone has any images that they would like to contribute to ARKive then please get in touch (katrina.armour@wildscreen.org.uk).

Many thanks,
Kaz Armour

Did you consider going to the major gardens of the world and ask them for help. My friend Seymour Linden has passed away, he specialized in this species. Perhaps put a request in the ISI Journal, the British Journal, there are many journals available for your use. Ask Gordon Rowley Many professionals, and books, Dick Wright also has had a collection in the past, I know the Huntington does, they have inherited collections of Collectors. Thank you for doing this for us. Perhaps you could ask this group for pictures of specific names that you are missing. There are three journals published by the Srawberry Press in Mill Valley CA 1415 388-5017 HermanLeah@Aloe.com
Check on S. Carter listed in the Illustrated Handbook of Succulents Plants He wrote that chapter. All kinds of Professional help out there waiting for you to call. Thank you Norma

Lots of beautiful images and commendable, but how does one define threatened with extinction for these purposes.....I admit I did not read the entire site.....Cycas revoluta was on the site as was the Ginko and the venus fly trap......each of these are some of the most common plants you will ever see at any garden center.....while there may be pressure on natural populations (true for many bug eating plants) they are surely in no danger of becoming extinct.

I love the effort and the pictures of many things were fantastic, but not sure how the definition is applied and would like to hear....obviously critically important for your mission as credibility is all any environmental group has. Is there a list on the site detailing the 17,000 species you are looking for?

I've already bookmarked the page so I can look back at it many times in the future :o) Dan

Hi All - thank you so much for your responses, they are very helpful and I will give them a try. I have tried contacting a few botanical gardens, someone at Kew Gardens is currently looking at the list I have sent them and the Missouri Botanical Garden had a few live species images that were great. Unfortunately the list is probably too large to post on here I think, there are 150 Madagascan plants on the list I am currently working on.

Dan - You're right, although these species are now common in garden centres which means they are unlikely to disappear completely, they are however dwindling in the wild which is where they are most important - especially in terms of ecosystem functioning etc. The species that we work on are those listed on the IUCN Red List, whose populations are threatened in the wild. If you'd like any more info then feel free to email me at katrina.armour@wildscreen.org.uk. And thank you for your interest in our website!
