echeveria pruning questions...

Hey all, thanks for the help in the earlier thread, I have another question-- I ordered an echeveria from my local nursery, but having not seen it until it arrived, well it's a bit lopsided. (etiolated? is that what this is?) It's also slightly big for the pots I have, and I was hoping to pot it with a few smaller echeveria. Is it safe to prune back the larger uneven leaves (I'm thinking all of the long ones on the bottom, leaving the top cluster) and pot it? And I could also save some of the large leaves to propagate in smaller pots. Is this the right idea, or is it too much trauma for the plant?
