Aloe ID help please

Posted by revelle z9 / Central CA (My Page) on

I am trying to identify my previously unidentified succulents and this one is one of the unknowns... I've had it for probably 5 years and it's easily doubled (maybe more) in size. The leaves are not fat and plump, they're kinda thin really, and the thorns are thick and sharp. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Here is a link that might be useful: Photos of most of my succulents & cacti

Hey Revelle,

Gorgeous Aloe, I don't know the ID but I'm sure a couple of others at least will.

I browsed your beautiful plant collection, interesting selections. I made notes to suggest corrections to a couple of your IDs, but forgot the note at the office. But from memory, one of the earlier plants, that lovely hanging plant is not a Rhipsalis salicorniodes as it's labeled, but rather a variegated Portulcaria afra. Very nice, one of my favorties & currently being discussed on another thread near this one (sorry I forgot which).

I'll try to get back to this on the weekend, but as I recall there were a few plants marked Aloes which I really thought were variously Gasterias, one Haworthia & one GasterAloe.

But all really handsome & healthy looking. I'll have to come back & take the tour again. Thank you for sharing your great garden w/ us!

Could this possibly be Aloe broomii?

It looks like my A. Broomi. I hope you don't mind me asking but where in Central CA are you located? I'm in the San Joaquin Valley just north of Fresno.

SLO TOWN?

My Home Town?

I had a look at your albums, and see an awful lot of familiar places. Love your Shell Creek and Carrizo images. You have a lot of nice plants, and your pens are terrific.

Look familiar?

Hi Revelle,

I got your EMs, but I prefer to do this here if that's alright.

Also, these are guesses, not certainties (except the hanging P. afra, of that I'm sure).

37/119: marked Gasteria, I think it's an Aloe, don't know which;

Guess: 46/119 may be a GasterAloe;

Believe: 47/119 is Haworthia, not Gasteria.

Sure: 48/119 Anacampseros, don't know which

Also, 63/119 that Sans Cylindrica: is that spaghnum moss as top dressing? If so, I'd suggest removing it, as it can bring rot.

Gorgeous plants, some real beauties -- you're doing a great job!

I agree with Aloe broomii for that one. :)

Hello Revelle!

Wonderful albums you have...of everything! I poked around & enjoyed seeing the landscape, sunsets, flowers, birds & especially ALL the wood stuff...pens, bowls & all! I was sidetracked for a LONG while!

OH! Back to IDs of your plants -my take on them. In your succulent album, by your numbers:
(Some agreement w/Karen)

7, 12, 23, 66 & 69 are not Faucaria tuberculosa, but Faucaria tigrina.

31 and elsewhere, is Aloe 'Blue Elf', but it is not a hybrid of Aloe nobilis. Some think it could have Aloe humilis in the mix. It is one of Hummel's hybrid Aloes.

35 The 2nd 'Blue Elf' you show, looks to me like Aloe 'Walmsley's Blue'.

37 and elsewhere, looks like a xGasteraloe - not Gasteria marmorata.

38, may be an xPachyveria or a Pachyphytum.

39 is Aloe brevifolia, not breviflora

43, 83 & 90 one you have as dorotheae is Aloe congolensis, other looks like Aloe here-altho' in other pix, ones you have as G. marmorata look like xGasteraloe.

45 is Aeonium 'Sunburst'

46, yes, xGasteraloe (Aloe aristata hybrid)

47, 93 & 113 yes, (but change spelling) xGasterhaworthia 'Royal Highness'

48 Anacampseros rufescens 'Sunrise' (some call variegata)

51 Add f. variegata to the end of Agave angustifolia

56, LOVE your potting bench! :D

70 Sedum rubrotinctum

77, Aloe brevifolia, not distans

80, 81, 82 Could be Aloe (perhaps 'Helen Haage') or xGasteraloe -flowers would help

88 not a Crassula, rest of name correct Portulacaria afra f. variegata

98 If no teeth along margin, it is not what you have tagged it

Nice collection you have!! :)

RE: Aloe ID help please

Hee hee...Jeff, I signed up again today. I couldn't help myself! Didn't want to keep asking you ...and others for favors to post IDs for me. (These were too many for that.) :D I just won't be posting any fabulous pix of my plants here! Thanks for your previous help!

RE: Aloe ID help please

Favours? We don't grant no stinkin' favours...

It wasn't a problem, but I'm glad that you're here.

 o
RE: Aloe ID help please

I don't know you, but I'm glad that you are here. Norma

 o
RE: Aloe ID help please

Norma,

She's smarter and much, much nicer than I am, in addition to being better looking. What's not to like?

And Revelle,

I meant to say - the first plant does indeed look like A. broomii v. broomii

 o
RE: Aloe ID help please

Revelle-love your album-love your plants! Very nice.

RE: Aloe ID help please

Thanks, Jeff & Norma! Just nice-smelling favors, Jeff! :P (Blush!) Thanks so much for all the compliments, but I don't think so...on all counts!

Norma, I've met you on 2 occasions. Once, several years back at a SDCSS meeting and again at Patrick Anderson's Garden Party (also a few yrs. ago). You may have driven up with Dana that year, but I'm not sure. I was also friends with Al Waltemyer, whom you knew. Not that any of this helps you remember who I am. :)

Brad, fabulous pic (as always) of the ocean view over the sux!

Thank you thank you to everyone who posted nice comments about my photo gallery and especially IDs for my plants - I am blown away by your knowledge! I really can't say thank you enough (but I'll stop with these 3 for the sake of avoiding boring repetition). :)

Nancy :)

I have that same aloe so really appreciate the ID. Mine is looking kind of rough as it fell off the porch and I didn't find it for a few weeks, it's repotted now & seems to be recovering.
Your photos are really pretty.
Tally HO!
