Pretty much at the limit of winter cold tolerance this plant is around 6-7 years sold..all but two in larger and larger pots. After it's first summer in ground,we had back to back 32-33f nights in January. Almost did it in. It's now done a nice comeback to near 3'..the lower frosted stems turned pale green and splotched black from the cold..then almost white in spring/summer!..very pale green. Jealous soucal, where a no frost climate won't get you those nice white trunks? lol-wink

Great looking Euphorbia! Its nice to see you posting some pictures around here again too Stan! I wonder if the cold hardiness of this plant is reduced compared to the "normal" cultivar of this species. I was at an auction recently where some people were discussing the propagation of plants that are infected with a virus. I was surprised to learn that 'Sticks on Fire' is just such a plant, as are almost all of the dicots that show unusual coloration...

Thanks Jo,yeah, the come and go of color seems to follow what you said...I wasnt sure it would return to red at all for awhile there..it was greenish until summer really kicked in.

Terrific snap of your wonderful plant, Stanofh! I lost part of mine to an unexpected freeze back in January. It's barely half of the plant it used to be. :( I hope to get it in the ground soon, for a better chance of survival. We rarely have frosts where I am, but I don't want to take any chances this year.

Thanks rosemarie!..they are fussy on placement. I found that frost hurts the most if they get sunrise sun rather than shade until they have time to thaw out-this same plant had no damage from equal cold when it was potted in the driveway for years..I think the front yard spot is warmer overall, but that sunrise fast thaw might be harder on it.

That is not a virus, just another form, It is very dangerous plant, wash off any sap with oil of any kind. Keep your hands off any open parts like eyes, mouth, whatever, it will really sting. Pour butter milk on it right away should it happen to you, wash your hands right away and wear gloves when handling the plant. Norma

| Norma~ You brought up using butter milk if you get this plant on you. Very Pretty Plant by the way!!! Most people dont' have it on hand... So... Here's a way to make it!! Take 1 Tablespoon of vinegar and mix with 1 cup of milk let sit for a few minutes... also mixing a little baking soda with water to make a paste helps with insect stings and ichy's... just dab it on and let it sit and dry for awhile! | Thanks for the tips, Stan. For me, that means finding a place for it in my front yard, somewhere sticky fingers can't get ahold of it. I've had attempts at stealing one of my pots & breaking off bloom stalks (good thing the stems were too thick & would not break). Makes sense to let it thaw out slowly. :) |

Thanks all!...Firesticks never needs pruning. I had the plain green form, and even in the S.F. bay area it gets to fence high bushy form fairly fast.I cut it down (while making sure the water hose took care of the sap) as it just lost all visual appeal as a green blob. Two larger branches were rooted.Yep,much nicer looking as a potted succulent "pine tree"
