I think it is in the night blooming Cereus family. You can make at least 3 or 4 cuttings off of that long piece. It was a good find! I would let it sit out in the air and let a callous for a few days and then plant it in some well draining loose soil. Don't water very often, once every week or two weeks would be fine.

Zackey: I'm not quite sure what you mean by a callus? Also, it's growing horizontally - do I have it planted wrong?

Crenda: I'm a scavenger; after the neighbors (renters) moved out the owner was letting everything die as he was going to remodel. So I got the succulents, a twig with a couple of leaves that has turned out to be a lovely Crepe Myrtle & another little bush/twig that I'm still trying to figure out. : D

a callous means the cut bit is completely dry and hard. It has sealed off. If it is still open and wet the cut can rot. if it is dry, less chance of rot.

Sorry that was a typo. Cactus and succulents are a few of the plants that grow better if you let the end callous over for a few days. I've only seen them grow vertically. You could grow it horizontally. I think if you did that you would have several new plants sprout once it gets rooted.

And if you have a trellis, tree, or metal sculpture, this plant wants to climb into them and hang out.

Many people make it grow on a post for structure. It will flower and FRUIT if it is swarm enough. You might need to protect it or put it on the south sunny side of your house. A good freeze might get it where you are at. I do not know your weather.

Great find, Katz! Have you ever eaten dragon fruit? It's quite tasty. Hope yours blooms and bears fruit for you!

I live in Daytona Beach FL so warm weather is not a problem although I was concerned about salt tolerance. I've never had dragon fruit so I am really excited about this! Again, thank you everyone!
