Something pollinated my Epiphyllum

What could have pollinated my Epiphyllum? I live in southern California and the plants are in hanging baskets outside year round.

Is the fruit edible?

Do you have more than 1 species? It so a Hummingbird, an ant, wind.
If you want to eat the fruit I would check that out very carefully, ask the Los Angeles library to research it for you. Ask for a research librarian. Call or write a Email to the curator of the Huntington Garden. Ask a Master Gardner. I'll see if I can find out, I really don't know, perhaps X will be able to answer this question. I don't know if all cactus fruit can be eaten, many can. Norma

Cactus fruits are not poisonous, but the fruits of Epiphyllum are not used as food as far as I know. I don't know why, maybe the taste is not that great.

I ate one of mine. It was something like a Kiwi fruit only not as good. Not something I would do again--it wasn't that tasty. Apparently it depends on the cultivar--some are tasty, some are awful.

"A close relative of Epiphyllum is the vining pitaya cactus (Hylocereus and Selenicereus species), whose so-called dragon fruit have attractive magenta or yellow skin, and whose flavor varies from bland to magnificent, depending on the cultivar."
