That's ridiculous- it's a lot of fun and you can do it as a hobby. I used to do that in an aquarium with dirt covered in sand. They start off so small that you could plant and care for them all in one ten gallon aquarium which cost about 15 dollars. Just lay down an inch or two of moist dirt, sprinkle the seeds, and then cover them with about a centimeter or sand. Then just spray the sand when it starts to dry out. That's it.

I live in Maine and I can germinate cactus seeds. In fact, I have about 20 seedlings right now....they are a few weeks old. They are in a recycled clear plastic portion cup I got at little caesars. lol

This question is for Brewerbonsai. I noticed that it looks like mulch that you have your seedlings growing in.
Could you please tell me what substrate you are using for your cactus seedlings. I live pretty much in the same climate as you do and might have a better time growing using your soil formula.

I forgot to say that you don't need the sand. It's kind of for looks and a centimeter might be a little too much.

This is my first attempt at germinating seeds. I used sifted soil and mulch. When I transplant them I'll put them in a grittier, less organic mix. I have 2 , 4 foot light fixtures with a wide spectrum bulb and a bright white bulb in each fixture. things are germinating like crazy.
