Yucca help?

Posted by nodakgal z3 (My Page) on

I was given a piece of Yucca today. It is a cutting that looks like it has roots. Very tough roots, almost stick like. The Yucca looks like a tuber and I did do some reading online trying to find the best way to plant this and am all confused.
Do I wait for the cut part to heal more before planting? Some say to plant right away and others say wait a few days.
I know the cut portion will have to be above the soil, right?
Some sites say to lay horizontal on soil but this has some roots it looks to me. No leaves at all, I think it was part of the stem of the plant?

I know no water but for how long? Until it is rooted? Its confusing that there are no leaves so not sure how long to withhold water?

Can someone give me a little advice to go on?

Good lucka with Yucca

ND Gal,

Since it has roots, you needn't wait to plant it - go ahead and put it in the soil (assuming you'd had it a day or so for it to callous) and let it stay dry for several more days. Then give it a bit of water and plenty of heat and sun (or as much as you can).

You might want to cultivate this plant in a pot until it's established. Then you can put it in the ground (I'm assuming that it's hardy to your area, but it may not be), but it's probably best to wait until Spring to do that. Speaking of personal experience here, I'd have to get my digging bar out if I was to put a plant in the ground now - not the most auspicious time to do so.

Given enough heat and as much light as you can, you should see some leaves in several weeks.

RE: Yucca help?

I know a bit more today. It was a rescue plant that didn't look like much of a plant! LOL It was dry and over potted and had a total of 3 or 4 leaves coming out of the top.My sister cut it off and will reroot the top. I dunno if there is much hope for it, but will give it a try!

I've had it about 24 hours. So will get it planted in a pot today and put it in the south window sill.
The roots threw me off, because they are "woody" roots, some are so stiff and a couple have some bend to them.
Thank you very much.
