Linda congratulations. Norma

RE: success.....;)

That's great Linda!

How long did it take? Just wondering a time frame for us anxious newbies. LOL!

I just got a cutting yesterday. I hope to say the same soon!

RE: success.....;)

They should root within two weeks, or so.
I haven't checked on mine yet....but I'll update when I have evidence of roots...

Thanks again to Mike!

One of my leaves has a teensy, tiny sprout on the end of it. Nothing on the other one yet. Think the cutting is rooted somewhat, I haven't tugged very hard on it for the past week.
It was a little more than a week after I potted it up and laid the leaves on the soil that I had the sprout. I did mist it once, but don't want to over do it.
Our whole entire month of October was cloudy and rain and more rain and I bet that didn't help!
The wait is agonizing! LOL

RE: success.....;)

Sheesh..

Where the heck was I when this thread posted?..LOL

Awsome everyone...Even I didn't know cuttings could root that fast. I never noticed before.
Boy if they were like kids or baby pets, or even us older folks, I guess they would grow faster than you can blink your eyes ha? Wouldn't that be nice? lol

Great thread!

Thanks so much for the updates:-)

Mike

Congrats to you who have rooted already.

However, FYI: tugging on them to check, undermines things by tearing & breaking the tiny fine new roots one's trying to grow in the first place.

The best & surest indicator of sucessful rooting is new growth: tiny, very cute & bright green!

RE: success.....;)

Mine's doing well also...thanks Mike!! This Jade is very pretty too.

RE: success.....;)

I remember you posting something like this after it was too late for me, and I myself killed a cutting here and there learning the hard way. I wished I had known this before.. Great Point

Thanks for the reminder Karen!

RE: success.....;)

I'm guilty of tugging.
Maybe we should start a support group. LOL!

I'm the kind of person who runs around my garden flicking dirt if it looks like a radish is poking through. LOL!

Can't wait to see the babies. :)

I'll try harder to remember not to tug..

Thanks Karen.

I received a beautiful cutting from Mike (thanks so much, Mike!) I removed two leaves that I'm also attempting to root. The cutting is starting to lose some of its coloring, but the new growth is a pretty red color.

See the little roots at the soil line?

Jojo - You asked how long it took for cuttings to root. I potted mine up on Oct. 8th, and I noticed some small roots on Oct. 23rd. My first leaf didn't show roots until a couple of days ago, and the other leaf still hasn't rooted. They're both resting on top of a potting mix made of turface and perlite.

Thanks Sarah,
Nice to have a little time frame. :)

Congrats to all! :)

RE: success.....;)

Wow.....I thought it would take alot longer to see roots everyone!!!

But I was told, that this is the best time of year to root Jades..No wonder.

Great work...Sweet!!

Sarah, how in the world did you get such a close up as those pics? Unbeleivable..You could take a picture of a spidermite if you had too..lol. Where did you root yours everyone? In just light, sun? Was there any moisture at all in the mixes you rooted on?Did anyone use heat?

Thanks everyone for the updates...:-)

I am happy for all you!

Mike

Great Questions Mike!!

I too was wondering about the camera, and how to get such great shots!

And all your other questions..:)

I have mine is a good cactus mix i got from a nursury, not a big box store! It's called Desert survivors, and it's the mix they use... Added a little pearlite...

and a tiny misting..

Now about a 2 week wait..LOL

'T is the Season!
Wonderful pics everyone.
I hope I have some success to share soon, too!

Helloe everyone!

I got my clipping last week (on the 6th i think)and quickly placed it in a 4" pot with Al's 1-1-1 mix! I did add a little water, I hope that wasn't too harmful. Seeing as the soil mix drains extremely quickly I don't think there will be a problem. I, too, would like to tug at mine after a few weeks but reading this thread and help from Mike I'll resist. :)

I'm glad everyones clippings are doing well! This gives me hope that mine will root and florish!

Thanks again and again Mike for sharing your beautiful plant will all of us!

I'll post my progress, as I hope others will continue to do!

Mike - It's funny that you commented on how close up my pictures were because when I was taking them, I got somewhat annoyed that I couldn't get shots even closer! I just used a point-and-shoot digital camera that's a few years old (5 megapixels), and I put it on the Macro focus setting to get detailed shots up close.

I realized that part of my last post wasn't too clear on my rootins methods. When I said, "They're both resting on top of a potting mix made of turface and perlite," I was referring to the two leaves that I'm trying to root, not the larger cutting. When I got the cutting, I removed two big leaves that were the lowest ones on the stem. I then dusted the stem with Rootone rooting hormone and potted it in a mix of 1 part fir bark, 1 part perlite, 1 part turface, and 1 part pea gravel. I put the pot on a south-facing windowsill, and I didn't water or mist at all until I saw evidence of roots.

I let the two detached leaves callous over for about a day or so, and then I dipped the tips in the rooting hormone and laid them on top of a pot with the 50/50 turface and perlite mix. I pushed the calloused tips down into the mix a little bit. Since they can't hold as much moisture as a larger cutting, I didn't put them right on the windowsill. I put them on a small table a foot or so away from it. A week or so ago, I moved the pot directly to the south windowsill because the leaves hadn't rooted yet, so I assumed they needed more light. I didn't mist or water those either until a few days ago. The reason I started misting them was because I moved another baby jade leaflet with roots to the same pot, and it needed the moisture.

The room the cutting and the leaves are in stays at about 67-75 degrees F, but the windowsill probably gets cooler at night. Our low temperatures have been in the 50s lately.

As to the rooting hormone, I know many people say it's unnecessary, but I didn't want to take any chances with Mike's beautiful cutting! I thought I'd help it out a little since jade growth seems to be slow this time of year in my area. :)
