That black color and the fact that it "indents" when you press on it concerns me...

I had it sitting on soil so I wonder if that is why it is black? Yes the indentation concerns me too. I wonder if this is just dead?

The two little white "lines" at the top of the black look like roots to me. I would set it on top of a mix of cactus soil and perlite and watch it the next few days. No water until you are sure there are roots.

Oh I didn't notice those white lines at all. Good eye! Ok going to keep it on the perlite/cactus soil and hope for the best. Thanks to everyone who helped.
