I was under the impression... it's hard being "under" an impression... that these go dormant in our winter (Northern Hemisphere). Very different flower from most of its genus.
Julie, I got this from Mike at OOA. I wish I would have purchased more; he may have more in the spring. It's an un-named species as of yet. Mike had it listed as "sp nova".
Location ? My undertsanding is Madagasgar (southern) summer is our November to March With lighter to moderate rains on west side heavier rains toward the east
Very interesting flowers! i didnt know dorstenia flowers got so odd. i also have an unidentified plant (an Astrophytum pachypodiums) named Sp. nova. i wonder where this name came from?
The plant, according to Mike, is from northern Madagascar which gets a fair amount of rain. Yet, as you see, it has a large caudex for storing water...interesting.
It's also how most new species are referred to until they're formally described (adhering to a lot of rules and getting it published in a scientific journal of some type).
You'll also see 'aff.', which is affinis, which means 'like' or 'is similar to', followed by a described species.
