Same as pumice in a sence although you may need to sift for size
Over all it's looser and airy enough to use in place of either grits or turface and not as as compacting as either.

I found it at a place call Telly's Greenhouse here in Michigan. The owner said his Bonsai specialist said they HAD to carry it. Lol

LilBit for some reason I thought you were on the west side of the state. Telly's has three location known to me and none are west?????

And is this product Stalite Perma-Till kiln expanded shale???? Sells for about $20/25# bag

Hi Howard! I went to the Troy location. It's about an hours drive. (I seem to get bored on days off lol and love to take little road trips) They had it in one of their jars with their name on it. And then a sticker that said stalite. I plan on calling them to see what their bag reads to know EXACTLY what type it is. I just haven't had the time at the moment unfortunatley. The owner said he bought it by big bags and then put them in the plastic jars. I only bought a few wanting to see how it works. I'll try to call them this weekend to see EXACTLY whats on the bag and then post what I find out.
