Quite Often I Just Don't Have a Clue

Last summer, I thought a cutting from Aeonium (arboreum v.) rubrolineatum would grow well in the front yard, so I planted one there. It sat there and sat there, doing no growing - in reality, it was rotting. I did notice the aerial roots coming out in profusion, but I didn't stop to think that they were there for a reason - to let me know the root ball and lower stem were dead, and that the plant would soon be dead if drastic measures weren't taken.
