Help with Identifying succulent and rescitating

Hi everybody,

I just found this site and would like help identifying my very sad succulent.

I've had it for years and it has grown tremendously since I got it as a wedding favor. It was very happy when I lived in Santa Barbara but no so much since I moved to California. It was severely damaged when a feral cat knocked it off my porch and most of the green rosettes(? proper description) were knocked off. Many of these stalks feel hollow and no new growth has developed. There are 2 remaining green rosettes but both seem to be losing leaves.

Since I feel lucky that the original small plant just grew when I watered it and grew even more when I repotted it. I haven't repotted it in awhile and have been trying not to disturb the plant since it was decapitated. My indoor house temperature during the winter ranges from 50's to 62F. It has been near a north facing window more the past few months. Should I move it to the south?

Thanks with any id help and with keeping my plant alive. The picture shows most of the plant that looks dead and then a closeup of the few living parts.

Hi Jennifer,

Even before I saw the photo, I guessed that you were talking about an aeonium, and lo and behold! It's hard to be sure with so few leaves, but from the branching, twiggy habit I'm thinking it's Aeonium haworthii. You can Google some images and confirm that, comparing them to what the plant looked like when it was healthy.

The dead branches are just that - dead. If it were my plant, I would remove the remaining rosettes (proper description) and re-root them. Now is the time to do that, because aeoniums are winter growers. Snap them off, and let them rest a few days to callous over - this species won't need long because its stems are pretty woody. Then put the rosettes in fresh, well-draining mix and keep BARELY moist until you see new growth.

The poor thing also looks sun-starved. Your plant (or cuttings) will want as much light and warmth as you can give it - definitely put it in a south window. But move it gradually, or what you have left will burn. And get it outdoors into the sunshine as soon as temps warm up and frost danger is past.

I googled the name you gave me and the pictures match my healthier happier plant. I will follow your instructions and get my plant some more light. Hopefully it will get warmer here soon and then I can give it some outdoor time.
