You are right,the skin does look like stone. It feels like a lizard as well :)

I have a similar Bishop's cap that is going to bloom any day now, and I am curious if you have ever tried harvesting seeds. I would like to, but I can never get the flower to live long enough to produce fruit. Any suggestions?

straxman: Do you have another plant? I have never observed any self-fertility among Astrophytum.
