Cold Hardy Cactus Bed zone 5A (many pics)

Hey everyone!

Its been a long time since I have posted any pics or really said much of anything on here... so its time to update.

Last year lait July - early August I planted some cacti and succulent cuttings I got from a gardenweb member. As the title says these aren't just any plants theya are all cold hardy. Over the winter all I did was pile some pine needles around them and let mother nature take her course.

This is the bed last year with the plants just put in it...

And these were taken on July 4th 2006 :-)

I have more rocks and am hoping to expand the garden. The only problem is trucking another ton of gravel up to mix with the sandy soil to ensure good drainage.

Hopefully I can expand to other hardy plants (yuccas?) to spice the the garden even more.

Now what i want is wet hardy plants (zone 8/9-very wet!)

Heya Travis;

You had some great growth over the past year...any blooms yet?

I've got an O. imbricata that's in bloom now...nice red/magenta and had a pink polyacantha that was a first bloom also. My macrorhiza, which is my oldest and biggest had 73 blooms this year.

No actually I have not gotten any blooms yet... I am thinking for sure next year.

Like I said they were planted as single or 2 pad clumps lait last year so they are still working on the whole roots and shoots part of the game before they flower. Do they only bloom in the spring or could I expect some lait summer / fall?

Hi Travis;

Usually?...only spring and early summer. But there might be the oddball flower or two. Now succulents are a different matter. My sedums are all in bloom or bud right now. Some semps are finished and some are just starting. And the hardy iceplants have a long season too. Orostachys will be in bloom in the late summer/early fall.

Let me know what varieties you have by email and I'll see if I can fill in some blanks.
