I understand you, Dawn... IMHO the Echino's flowers are the best of the entire cactus family, in spite of bodies often insignificant. I have a dozen of them and even if the south americans (Notos and Gymnos) have proved to do much better where I live, I can't wait for my next Echinocereus!
Ha ha, Dawn, your E. pulchellus is about 3x the size of my little baby! I got mine for the pink flowers it produces, but the squat little body is appealing too. Amy
They certainly do put on a show with the flowers. The only one I have is E. viridiflorus, which has quite nice spines, but still not exactly a show-stopper without the flowers. Its supposedly hardy in north-west Europe with a little protection from the rain but I'm too chicken :)
I was told, by the specialist that I got my baby from, that they like a good winter chill and strong summer growth from hot sunny (hot and sunny for England!) conditions with regular water. But the flowers don't last very long. Mine goes quite red in strong sun but that is apparently OK.
Echinocereus viridiflorus, reichenbachii, and triglochidiatus are all hardy outdoors here in NW Wyoming. Many other species will tolerate very cold temperatures in a greenhouse. The species from Baja California are not so cold tolerant.
Yes, they are great, and I've managed to cross some of mine. I have; pentalopus, purpureus, fendleri, triglochidiatus var. paucispinum, fitchii, palmeri, gentryi, morricali and a list of wants as long as my arm!!!! Best of all, they are flowering right now...hope to sort some images out soon for you all! Wazzimodo
