This seems to be Lithops gesinae. I think its a very attractive species, not very common. Its "dottier" than mine, with the dots less joined up. Your's seems to have very long flower tubes?

Are all those dried up things spent flowers?

Amy, probably spent flowers, old seed pods and the dried remnants of former leaves. If the collection was smaller I might try removing those crannies which are invitations to all types of problems. Now they are only removed if the plant gets very ratty looking and must be rejuvenated by taking cuttings to start all over again. Now, actually early October, is the ideal time for me to be doing that. Amy I learned that I need very good light to get decent macro pics. I'm having a great time learning how this favorite toy works. I wish there would be a forum devoted to sharing hints for digital photography of our plants and flowers.

SnB, you never cease to amaze me when you are IDing these plants. This plant has "gesinae" as part of it's ancient label. You give me renewed confidence. I wish I could afford to ship you over here to eyeball every one of my Mesembs. A long term goal is to create a digital record of the entire C&S collection both in and out of bloom. The Mesembs alone present a Herculean task.
